Week One in Italy

We didn’t get away from the marina as early as we had hoped, finally got on the road late afternoon so we spent the first night at a restaurant still in Croatia. Had dinner there and a coffee before we set off in the morning. We had an uneventful journey through Slovenia and came into Italy near Trieste.

 

The architecture is wonderful and there are lots of campers on the road too.

 

We drove up the side of Lake Garda

and found a stopover campsite near the top of the lake.

We walked down to a restaurant by the lake and as it was our first night in Italy we HAD to have pasta. The Italians really know how to serve Pasta !!

 

The next day we travelled north up the remainder of Lake Garda.

Through tunnels

Then we came into the mountains and valleys of the South Tirol.

Typical buildings of the area remind me of Austria which of course isn’t far away, just over the Brenner Pass.

The campsite is tucked into the valley right underneath the cable car.

We took the motorbike out for a tour around the area …………………….

 

and over a pass or two………………

and down a valley or two, where they grow an amazing amount of Apples………

on every piece of land they can get a tractor onto.

Of course you have to stop to cool down in a nice shady place once in a while.

Then back to the campsite where the cable cars glide over head all day………..

the river behind the campsite rushes by, the wild flowers grow…….

and even the milk is delivered by cable cart……..

and we celebrated our Wedding Anniversary in some style !!!

We took the bus into Merano, a beautiful town on the same river,

We had a really tasty lunch of pasta, of course, and strawberries and cream, then wandered some more

 

Good shopping in the old town and in one shop it is always Christmas.

The houses are beautifully decorated, the scroll work around the windows is painted not plaster.

We waited for the bus opposite another beautiful building.

 

Then one last glass of wine in the hotel garden

before we walk back down the hill,

 

through the apples to the camper.

 

Then all too soon we are on the road again heading for our next stop in the wine region of Barolo.
